Location:
Roseland, New Jersey
Description:
Occurred on March 3, 2000. John Foley, an officer with the New Jersey Police Department, Unit 603, successfully apprehended an armed robbery suspect being chased on Route 280.
A three car accident resulted after the bank robber, who had previously been incarcerated for several years, accidentally started a chain reaction. This resulted in a non-involved Jeep Cherokee to roll over, breaking the wrist of the driver. The Cop car pushed off the roadway, mowing down a tree, and flipping and sliding back onto the roadway. The bank robber's maroon Ford Probe helicoptered over a guard-rail and up an embankment. The robber was well enough to exit the Probe and attempt to stuff money in his pockets. Upon turning to flee, he was quickly surrounded by Cops and dove to the ground, spread eagle.
The police officer suffered contusions from head to toe. The most serious being a neck injury that required an upper disk to be removed and a cadaver bone to be fused together with a titanium plate, in the neck.
